Wet flies do not feature heavily in my fly boxes, not because they do not work but due to the fact I mostly fish on Chalk Streams. Many of these are upstream only so across and down with a team of wet flies is not really an option. They can be very effective though and I always have one or two in the boxes when visiting other rivers.

    Like you Lindsay I very rarely fish Wet Flies now. When I fished the Wgarfe at Bolton Abbey I often fished pocket water or the faster glides upstream with about a rod and a half of line out. If there's a hatch on the fish often take the flues as soon as they hit the water do you can visibly see the take as you would a dry.

When I heard about traffic lite cormorant and buzzers I did a batch with body’s red, amber, green equal bands. Not great but later a red front with green rear section had some success. Same for red and amber. Then I saw an actual traffic lite 😀✋🏻

    The classic hares ear and its variations are a staple part of most anglers collections. With good reason they just work be it on stream, river pond to the largest lake. The right variation can cover many forms and stages of lifecycle of aquatic insects, shrimp or hoglouse, at a push even pin fry. It just looks like food. At a push could even be taken by a freshly stocked fish confusing it for a pellet. This version with the hackle under the thorax cover is often seen over the pond. Depending on size can represent many types of olive or mayfly. Different partridge fibres, or dyed partridge can represent specific nymphs.

  • @JeremyLamovsky
    @JeremyLamovsky 4 дні тому

    I always tell people this hares ear story. I was a kid fishing an Erie tributary for Steelhead. I lost two big fish, nobody else was catching anything aside from one guy who was getting one after the other at the tailout of a run. I asked what he was using. "Hares ear nympth". This despite using spinning tackle. I use spinning, centerpin and fly rod now and i use these in different sizes and variations wirh all three. First fly i learned after wooly buggers and waltz worms

    Always have a few in various patterns in my box. Killer pattern on any day, any water👍🏻

  • @michaelshaw8370
    @michaelshaw8370 6 днів тому

    Same for other equipment especially landing nets, line trays basically any item splashed or immersed by river or lake water. If at other than your main water I even not only make certain that all flies used or if a fly box is swamped are dipped, rinsed then dried before the next trip. Not only mussels larvae of shrimp will survive for days in the damp mesh of a landing net even in lakes and river systems twenty miles apart. They may contain exactly the same aquatic species or similar. The But is, not only are you risking introducing something as nasty and invasive as killer shrimp. Two close aquatic environments may have had stocking from other suppliers the ecosystem may well have been exposed to different viruses, bugs, infections. The introduced larvae could be carrying a pathogen that they have a resistance to the new location has not encountered. Remember the virus that American signal crayfish carried that has our native crayfish are now almost wiped out with the few remaining colonys still at risk from the invaders. Ever since foot and mouth I have done this with all equipment. Same with when swapping flies or finding a couple of heron or other feathers. Always clean and decontaminate before adding to your own kit. Many years ago I introduced a friend to fly fishing he had mainly his granddads old flies l lent him some some more modern serviceable gear and he had a good day and caught a few on what was my last trip to Bewl. Including one on one his grand dads flys as many had rusty hooks I offered to tie more of the same on modern hooks ready for the next season and introduce him on how to tie his own I put the old box next to my nymphs and buzzers. Two months later when I checked those boxes the old flys had some feather mites. The only time I failed to add mothballs I ended up with two boxes of dust and half empty hooks over six hundred flys gone only synthetic and varnish covered bodies survived. Feather , pheasant herl, ostrich herl, seals fur, mole, hares ear, tree rat. All gone. So same with any flys found while fishing attached to old leader material in a trouts jaw or in foliage. Check, clean if in doubt take a pic and copy then safely discard

    Even the bibio can have variations. Hot spot can be orange, red, claret, yellow, green, somber, fluorescent, tinsel, UV, or sub the seal for mosaic material. For a pulling hopper another option is use knotted latex legs to generate movement and vibration. If you are running short on Pheasant tail. Try knotting several strands of horsehair three or four strands together with an equal length of copolymer or nylon to add protection from teeth.

    @michaelshaw8370 8 днів тому

    When you buy flys especially from website or tackle shop. You a deceptive range of choices available to you. Having say twenty colour mixes of fabs with a range of sizes. Sounds a lot at first. When you learn how to tie your own, as skill and experience levels rise. Now you have the almost unlimited choices. Now you can use whatever make or style of hook. As in a heavier gauge to cover larger fish or to reach depth faster. More hackle for movement or buoyancy combine with a lighter gauge for dries or upper water layers. Use your own blends of materials, colours, ribbing, legs, tag, hotspot, tailing fibres, wings. Now you can target your fly to your specific favourite venue, conditions, period of the season. What works changes be it early spring, midsummer heat, as things cool down, even into the winter. Not only size, balance of materials, buggy, sparse, or bushy have their best time. Now you are limited only by budget, materials, hours you can spend behind the vice, and your combination of experience and imagination. We all have the what the heck moments. Some work, many don’t, that next big thing could be from your vice. That new blend of natural and or synthetic or twist to an old favourite can change a nothing is working day. Yes you can be spoiled for choice. Rods, lines, leader setup, presentation, depth, retrieve, then combination of fly choice. Read the conditions. Crack the code with the ability to read the changes. A slight change in light, temp, wind direction, speed, barometric pressure even a couple of points can encourage or stop a hatch. When the food moves so do the fish are the fish close to the surface or deeper in the water column. In some strong sun situations the fish could be deep with a dash to the upper layers to hit food then dive back into the depths this may be due to light or birds hitting fish that spend too much time near the surface in rivers and estuaries add the threat from seals even dolphins. Fish need to feed and avoid being food for predators. Some things are constant. In the last forty years many things have changed. However much time we have left before health, age, economics. Or that guy upstairs calls us. We must enjoy every session we can. While being open to the changes that are bound to happen in our fishing journey. Look how many fisheries that have gone this year some forever. We should do what we can to continue to support both local and major waters. By using them and encouraging both new next generation and bringing back friends who had to step back due to life, family, work commitments. They might now be able to come back. As they do will one of them bring in the next generation of top talent. Will Jock Kettles find the next air frier?? Sorry could not resist that one. 😂😂😂

    From early childhood until 45 years I would watch my dad tying his flies with fascination. Everything from dry fly-lure to massive salmon fly for use on the Tay or display on someone’s wall. I have the beautiful box he made with all manor of exotic and I think quite rare plumage in. I don’t know what to do with it now. I so miss my dad and the thousands of skills he had. Oh, his smoked trout was the best in the world. Never equaled. I sometimes look at the Koinore split cane hardy rod he had from his younger days. I’ll never part with it. I even have a letter from Mr Hardy himself who wrote to dad in the 50’s wishing him luck in the Highland Games. One day I hope to befriend another fellow of similar age and experience to me and rediscover fly fishing together. It’s been so long I wouldn’t know where to go or what to do.
